4Moms MamaRoo Baby Swing Recall

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall of the 4moms MamaRoo baby swing sold between January 2010 and August 2022. When the MamaRoo swing is unoccupied, the dangling strap presents a strangulation hazard to crawling infants. A free strap fastener kit is offered as a solution to this strangulation risk.

What is the 4moms MamaRoo? 

The 4moms MamaRoo is an infant swing that offers multiple motions, including bouncing up and down and swaying from side to side. It boasts an adjustable reclining seat and a touch-sensitive control panel, along with other interactive features.

The MamaRoo infant swing also features built-in sounds and Bluetooth capabilities. Moreover, it comes integrated with WiFi for voice control through Alexa.

Additionally, 4moms offers the RockaRoo rocker, an automatic baby rocker that smoothly moves from front to back. This baby rocker has five speeds, catering to both the “sleep” and “motion” needs of an infant.

4moms MamaRoo Risks

The 4moms MamaRoo baby swing issued a voluntary recall due to the strangulation risk posed by the dangling strap beneath the product. Crawling infants venturing underneath the unoccupied MamaRoo infant swing could become tangled in the hanging strap.

The CPSC stated, “4moms has received two reports of entanglement incidents involving infants who became caught in the strap under the unoccupied MamaRoo infant swing after they crawled under the seat, including a 10 month old infant who died from asphyxiation, and a 10 month old infant who suffered bruising to his neck before being rescued by a caregiver. No incidents involving the RockaRoo have been reported.”

The manufacturer’s guidance for the MamaRoo swing indicates that it is suitable “until your little one reaches a maximum of 25 lbs (11.3 kg) or attempts to climb out (approximately nine months), whichever comes first,”  They further advise to “always use the restraint system. Adjust to fit snugly. The restraint can be configured with the three-point harness or the five-point harness. If using the three-point harness, [you] must transition to use of the five-point harness when the baby can sit up unassisted.”

MamaRoo Infant Sleeper Warnings

4moms emphasizes that the MamaRoo infant swing is not designed or promoted for sleep or use without supervision. The company advises: “If baby falls asleep, move baby as soon as possible to a firm, flat sleep surface such as a crib or bassinet.”

Baby products, like the Fisher-Price Rock n’ Play, have been linked to sudden infant death. The inclined position heightens the strangulation risk by potentially causing the infant’s head to slump into a dangerous position. These positions include head tilting, leading to strangulation hazards, or the baby’s face pressing against the cushioned fabric, obstructing airflow.

4mom MamaRoo Recall

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a product recall (reference recall number 22-200) initiated as a voluntary recall on August 15, 2022. This recall targets MamaRoo models: 4m-005, 1026, and 1037.

Only the MamaRoo models that use a three-point strap system are included in the recall. MamaRoos that use a five-point strap are exempt from the recalled product list. Roughly 2 million MamaRoo swings were recalled in the United States, with an additional 60,000 recalled in Canada.

From January 2010 to August 2022, the recalled MamaRoo infant swings were available for purchase at Buy Buy Baby, Target, Amazon, and directly from 4moms.com. 

In an effort to address the strangulation hazard, 4moms now offers a strap fastener solution that can be used with the three-point strap swings. 

What Should Moms and Dads Do if They Have a Recalled MamaRoo? 

If you own a recalled swing and have a crawling infant, it’s important to stop using it immediately and store it in a place your child is unable to reach.
